Week Without Driving

Monday, September 30, 2024 - Sunday, October 6, 2024

Our Little Rock invites public officials, transportation professionals, advocates, and others to learn firsthand the challenges those without access to a personal vehicle face daily.

Did you know?

  • Almost one-third of people living in the United States do not have consistent access to a car?
  • Little Rock has a high percentage of households living with transportation insecurity. 8.2% of Little Rock households don’t have a car and 42.5% households have only one vehicle.

Our transportation system has been built around making sure cars can get where they need to go. The prospect of trying to make it a week without getting behind the wheel might feel insurmountable.

But nearly one-third of all people living in the United States don’t have a choice. Lacking regular access to or the ability to operate a personal vehicle, getting around can be dangerous, costly, and exhausting.

Walking in someone else's shoes

Our Little Rock invites you to go a week without driving yourself. For each trip, try to walk, bike, roll, scoot, ride the bus, ask a friend to drive you, or hire a ride-share or taxi.

If you must, grab your keys and drive yourself. There is no shame in doing so. Our Little Rock just asks you to reflect on why other ways to get around aren’t practical and how they could be better.

The goal of this challenge aims to draw attention to the difficulties faced by nondrivers and inspire decision mkaers to address the barriers and gaps in our transportation system.

How to participate

  1. Then during the week of Sept 30 – Oct 6, 2024:

Partners

In 2021, Disability Rights Washington launched #WeekWithoutDriving to challenge our leaders to better understand the barriers nondrivers experience in accessing our communities. After two successful years in Washington State, in 2023 the challenge went national in partnership with America Walks.

Our Little Rock is proud to join organizations across the country to promote this event! Are you interested in joining us in this effort? Contact us at hello@ourlittlerock.org to discuss ways we can partner and deepen our impact.
