About

A team of livability advocates and professionals will install crosswalks and pedestrian islands so people can cross Monroe in a safer, more dignified way.

Why Here?

Monroe Street is a four-lane road that runs between the Arkansas Department of Health and a commuter parking lot. It has potential to connect UAMS, the Jonesboro Children’s Trail, the Jim Dailey Fitness and Aquatic Center and War Memorial Park.

In its current condition, crossings are challenging for people. Wide, multi-lane roads suggest to motorists that they have the right of way and leaves minimal infrastructure for people who are walking, biking, or rolling.

Project Overview

Arkansas Walking College/America Walks Fellow and Arkansas Department of Health employee, Shanetta Agnew, set out to change this with a walking action plan to provide a safe connection for her colleagues to get to and from work. The plan includes improved pedestrian infrastructure, such as crosswalks and pedestrian refuge islands.

Pre-Demonstration Survey

To better understand how impactful this demonstration is, please help us understand how you are currently interacting with Monroe Street.

Demonstration Timeline

Installation Day(s): August xx – xx, 2024

Volunteers will install the crosswalks and pedestrian islands. Expect to paint lines on the street and arrange hay bales for a fun, interactive, and colorful display.

Demonstration Pop-up: Aug – Oct, 2024

The installation is expected to be up for two months. Community feedback is welcome and encouraged! This is a tactical urbanism project, so it’s responsive to feedback and adjustment.

What Happens Next?

We will review the data collected before and during the installation to determine the impact of this initiative. If this project demonstrates a road design that better serves the people that use it, we will advocate to have the road design adjusted permanently.
