About

A team of livability advocates and professionals will guide the process to creating a safer intersection in the neighborhood in a fun, low-cost, high-impact way.

Why Here?

Commerce Street is notorious for having challenging crossings for people walking, rolling, and biking in the community.  The design of major intersections suggests to motorists that fast speeds are not only acceptable but expected. Speeding cars threaten injury to pedestrians and cyclists. From the input of 50+ community members, we learned that the intersection of Commerce and 17th Street, nestled between a school and a church, was an important intersection to make safer.

Project Overview

The project planning team has been working hard behind the scenes to create a project proposal, acquire a city permit, source materials, incorporate community feedback, and get the word out. We invite the Pettaway neighborhood community to join in on the design and implementation (aka the fun part)!

Community Planning workshop

Gospel Lighthouse Pentecostal Church Annex (1615 Commerce Street)

All welcome! The morning consisted of a welcome and overview. In the afternoon, there were walk, wheel, and bike audits along segments of Commerce Street. We met back in the meeting room for small group discussions and to share design concepts.

neighborhood Pop-Up installation (Intersection of commerce street & 17th street)

Community installation of traffic calming infrastructure and signage. Expect to paint tires and lines on the street for a fun, interactive, and colorful display. New street design concepts developed in the community planning workshop will be shared for public feedback.  The installation is expected to be up through the end of February 2024. Community feedback is welcome and encouraged!
