Introducing Week Without Driving

If I had to guess, many of you reading this have driven yourselves somewhere today. But was it a choice? Or was it your only option?

Our built environment is making it more and more difficult to go places without a personal vehicle. It puts a strain on those already facing economic hardships. People living in our city who make the average household income or less are spending 23% or more of their income to get around (an affordable target is 15% or less). It also puts people behind the wheel who would be safer if they were given another option.

But what if you didn’t have a choice? What if your age, income, or abilities kept you from getting behind the wheel. Little Rock was recently ranked as the 10th most dangerous metro area in the country to be a pedestrian and the state of Arkansas has predicted that our roads will only get more dangerous. Many of these people don’t have a choice and are forced to put themselves in harms way in their daily commute.

Introducing Week Without Driving

Our Little Rock is proud to represent Little Rock as a local organization for this year’s Week Without Driving happening from September 30 – October 6.

This week is for transportation professionals, elected officials, and advocates to learn firsthand the challenges those without access to a personal vehicle face daily.

So much of our city is built around getting around by car. But for many, this is not an option. We invite you to take the pledge and join us for a #weekwithoutdriving.
